JPJ CAR WINDOW TINT RULES 2026
In Malaysia, car window tinting must comply with regulations set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to ensure road safety and legal compliance.
JPJ specifies minimum Visible Light Transmission (VLT) requirements as follows:
- Front windscreen: minimum 70% VLT
- Front side windows: minimum 50% VLT
- Rear side windows and rear windscreen: no VLT limit
These requirements are established to maintain adequate driver visibility under all driving conditions and to support effective law enforcement.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Vehicle owners or registered drivers who fail to comply with JPJ window tint regulations may face serious penalties:
- First offence:
A fine of up to RM2,000, or imprisonment for up to 6 months.
- Subsequent offences:
A fine of up to RM4,000, or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both.
These penalties highlight the importance of ensuring that window tint installations meet legal requirements before driving on public roads.
Special Approval for Medical or Special Needs
JPJ provides a special approval process for individuals who require darker window tint due to medical or specific needs. Vehicle owners who fall under this category may apply directly to JPJ for approval in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
